Total body lift or body contouring refers to a combination of surgical procedures that removes excess skin and underlying fat. Many patients undergo an upper and lower body lift after weight loss surgery (bariatric). For these patients a specific procedure, such as a tummy tuck, isn’t enough as it doesn’t address sagging of the skin in the waist and back and a full circumferential body lift is required.
A belt lipectomy, also known as a lower body lift or circumferential body lift, offers the most dramatic transformation of the mid and lower body. It is a re-sculpting of the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks. Dr. Sheila Bond explains to her surgical weight loss patients that a lower body lift is typically broken into its components, including a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), a lateral thigh lift, and a buttock lift. These surgical body lifting procedures are needed to remove the excess rolls of skin and smooth and tighten the abdomen, waist and back. Some patients may also elect to have additional body procedures including breast lift and arm lift.
The body lift or circumferential body lift has the advantage that it can be done in one surgical session, or in stages, depending on the patients’ needs. Dr. Bond will discuss which option is best for you.

How Is A Lower Body Lift Procedure Performed?
The lower body lift is a procedure that addresses restoring a normal contour to a patient’s thighs, abdomen and buttock areas. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in a hospital’s surgical room. Dr. Bond removes excess unwanted skin of the stomach, outer thigh/hip, back /buttock areas and liposuction is then used to reduce excess fat in those areas. Deep sutures are placed to anchor the tissue to their correct location to provide pleasing contours and enhance the figure. Superficial dissolvable sutures are placed to close the incisions and the patient is placed in a compression garment. Drains are used to remove excess fluid. Patients are given antibiotics to prevent infection and pain relievers for their comfort. These larger procedures often require an overnight hospital stay.
