WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CAUSES OF GYNECOMASTIA?
Male breast development begins in the early teenage years as hormone production increases. For some males there is an imbalance with the sex hormones, testosterone and estrogen. Yes, it is true that both sexes have these hormones. Estrogen, the female hormone, stimulates the growth of breast tissue and male hormone testosterone stops the making of breast tissue. For men with gynecomastia there is an imbalance. Some of the reasons men develop excess breast tissue include:
- Hormonal changes and imbalances
- Obesity
- Genetics (heredity)
- Hyperthyroidism
- Steroid use
Gynecomastia can occur for males in adolescence and also in adulthood. Statistics indicate this condition affects 1 in 4 men over the age of 50.
WHAT IS THE SURGICAL PROCESS FOR MALE BREAST REDUCTION?
Dr. Bond performs male breast reduction at an accredited outpatient surgical center. The procedure is performed under general anesthetic or IV sedation. Dr. Bond advises patients that the goal of the surgical procedure is to remove excess fat and glandular tissue to restore a flatter, firmer and more masculine contour to the chest. The surgical technique is dependent upon the amount of excess breast tissue and sagging skin. She will advise you if liposuction will be needed to ensure optimal results.
